Age Group Update for the 2026 – 2027 Season
Big changes are coming to youth soccer, and we're here to help you navigate them. The 2026-2027 season will see national leagues change their age group classifications. This isn't just us changing; this is a nationwide change that all clubs are implementing.
Our compass has always pointed in one direction: your player's growth, development, and enjoyment. We're on top of this change and have a plan to help guide you through it.
Your Quick Guide to the Changes
What's happening?
The way age groups are classified is changing from the traditional calendar year (Jan-Dec) to a seasonal year (Aug-Jul). This means your player’s age group classification for the 26/27 season might be different than it is now.
Why the switch?
U.S. Soccer has determined this change after extensive review.
The new system:
- Builds Better Teams: Classifies players with their natural school grade peers.
- Levels the Playing Field: Eliminates the "relative age effect," which favors older kids in a traditional year-long group.
- Supports Growth: Offers stability during these critical growth years.
What does this mean for my player?
This does not mean that any changes will be automatically made for any players. Our coaching directors are already assessing each player as an individual. We are committed to making the best decision for each individual player.
What's Next? Our TAG Game Plan.
This is not a one-time event, but rather a process.
The following is what we have planned:
SPRING 2026: Coaches and directors will be in communication to address all of your questions.
ONGOING: We will be keeping you updated via our regular communication outlets.
Coaches will be in direct communication outlining your player's placement plan for the 2026-2027 season.
Your Action Right Now?
No action is required on your part. Your continued support of your player is what is most important. Our job is to handle all logistics needed.
Change is an opportunity for us to refine, improve, and excel. This change enables us to further customize our environment to ensure that every TAG Athlete not only thrives as an athlete and teammate, but also as a person.
Thanks for being part of the TAG family.
Questions?
Your first point of contact is always your team's coach. They are plugged into the process and can help you with any questions.
All the best,
